Start Less, Finish More: Building Strategic Agility with Objectives and Key Results (OKR)
Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) is a rapidly emerging goal setting practice for building strategic agility, featuring fast feedback and high levels of team engagement. Strategic agility is the ability to sense and respond more quickly to disruption and opportunity in your market, and create greater focus and alignment in the workforce.
The big difference from traditional planning methods? Objectives and Key Results are set, evaluated and reset frequently - typically quarterly. Teams focus on only 1-3 Objectives at a time. In a typical OKR environment, at least 60% of the goals are set bottom-up, in alignment with enterprise level strategies. This provides a much more engaging environment for the teams setting the goals. OKRs are a great way to ensure that teams stay focused on what matters to the customer, and maximize creativity. OKRs can support innovative pilot projects, reduce risk and uncertainty, or enable continuous improvement efforts.

Speaker Profile
Dan Montgomery is Founder and Managing Director of Agile Strategies. His diverse career has included employee performance management systems, IT project management, leadership development, and strategic planning. He has taught strategic planning and balanced scorecard for the past 15 years, and has led the development of strategic plans for dozens of clients. Formerly the Vice President of Professional Services for the Balanced Scorecard Institute, he is co-author of The Institute Way: Simplify Strategic Planning and Management with the Balanced Scorecard.
Dan has pioneered a more agile approach to strategic planning and strategy management. For many organizations, the traditional process is too heavy on design, and too light on the real work of implementation: employee engagement and adaptation under uncertain conditions. A deep dive into the world of agile software development led Dan to new insights on how to apply agile concepts to the work of strategic planning and management, and the creation of Agile Strategies.
Dan is an MBA graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, holds an MA in Psychology from Naropa University and is a veteran of major consulting firms including Accenture and Ernst & Young.
