Passing the Torch, Shaping the Future: Thai IOD’s Continuing Mission to Elevate Thai Directors for a Changing World

For more than two decades, the Thai Institute of Directors Association (Thai IOD) has played a pivotal role in advancing director development and promoting corporate governance standards in Thailand. Today, the organization stands at an important leadership transition as it prepares for the next chapter of its journey.

Mr. Kulvech Janvatanavit, Chief Executive Officer of Thai IOD and one of the key figures who has helped shape and strengthen the organization over the years, will complete his term on 30 November 2026. He will pass the leadership baton to Dr. Nattavut Kulnides, who will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer beginning 1 December 2026.

This transition is more than a change in leadership. It represents the continuation of Thai IOD’s enduring mission to enhance the quality of Thai directors, promote strong corporate governance, and strengthen the Thai business sector, while building upon these foundations to meet the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly dynamic global environment.

On this significant occasion, Thai IOD invites readers to reflect on the organization’s proud journey, the meaning behind its work for Thailand’s director community, and its vision for the future through the perspectives of both the outgoing leader and the incoming leader who will guide the organization forward.

A Foundation Built with Pride

For Mr. Kulvech, the greatest source of pride throughout his time at Thai IOD is not merely the organization’s achievements at different stages of its development. Rather, it is witnessing Thai IOD grow into an institution that has continuously contributed to enhancing the capabilities of directors and strengthening corporate governance standards across Thailand.

Over the years, Thai IOD has had the privilege of working closely with directors from leading organizations nationwide, observing their professional growth as they gained experience, navigated new challenges, and adapted to the evolving business landscape.

"Seeing Thai IOD become part of the growth journey of generations of directors is what makes me most proud," he reflects.

His words underscore Thai IOD’s role not only as a provider of knowledge but also as a trusted partner accompanying directors throughout their professional development journey.

When the True Value of Thai IOD Lies in Its People

When asked what has been most meaningful throughout his tenure at Thai IOD, Mr. Kulvech’s answer is simple: people.

Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to engage with directors from a wide range of industries, learn from diverse perspectives, and witness members apply the knowledge and insights gained from Thai IOD to real boardroom situations.

This reflects Thai IOD’s identity as more than an educational institution. It is a community of leaders where directors can exchange experiences, learn from one another, and build valuable long-term professional relationships.

Often, the value created through discussions among fellow directors proves just as important as the knowledge acquired in formal programs, helping board members navigate increasingly complex business challenges more effectively.

A Transition That Builds Upon Success

As Thai IOD enters this leadership transition, Mr. Kulvech expresses confidence in the organization’s future, citing its strong foundation and talented team who are well prepared to continue driving its development.

At the same time, he views the arrival of a new leader as an opportunity to bring fresh perspectives and create additional value from the foundations that have been carefully built over many years.

He believes that the role of directors is evolving rapidly. Director development can no longer focus solely on foundational knowledge. It must enable directors to continuously learn, grow, and adapt throughout their board careers.

For this reason, the leadership transition is not about starting over. Rather, it is the passing on of a strong foundation built collectively by many people, allowing the next generation to expand upon it and take the organization even further.

Preserving Strengths While Creating New Value

From the perspective of Dr. Nattavut Kulnides, Thai IOD’s greatest asset is its credibility and professional independence, qualities that have earned the trust of directors and business organizations for many years.

Throughout its history, Thai IOD has built a substantial body of knowledge on directorship, contributed to the advancement of governance standards, and fostered a vibrant learning community for Thai directors. These strengths must continue to be preserved and strengthened.

At the same time, the rapidly changing business environment raises an important question:

"How can Thai IOD create even greater value for directors and boards beyond what it already does well?"

The answer lies in leveraging the organization’s extensive knowledge, experience, and network to help boards navigate emerging challenges and make decisions that generate meaningful positive impact for organizations and society.

Moving Forward with “Directorship with Impact”

Looking ahead over the next two to three years, Dr. Nattavut envisions Thai IOD as the first organization directors think of when preparing for the future, whether they are new directors seeking a strong foundation or experienced board members looking to stay current and continuously challenge their thinking.

This is particularly important as boards increasingly confront critical issues such as artificial intelligence, sustainability, emerging risks, and business transformation, all of which require deeper insights and broader perspectives than ever before.

Thai IOD therefore aims to serve as a hub that connects knowledge, practical experience, and peer networks, enabling members to apply what they learn to strategic decision-making more effectively.

This vision is embodied in the concept of “Directorship with Impact”: a model of directorship that goes beyond possessing knowledge and focuses on making better decisions that lead to tangible business outcomes.

A Partner Throughout the Director’s Journey

In the future, Thai IOD aspires to be more than an organization that provides training and director development programs. It aims to be a place where directors genuinely feel: “This is our community.”

Regardless of where they are in their board careers, directors should be able to return to Thai IOD to learn, gain new perspectives, exchange experiences, and prepare for emerging challenges. Because being a director is a lifelong learning journey.

And when directors look back on their professional paths, Thai IOD should remain part of their growth story: a community that continuously connects, supports, and empowers them throughout their careers.

Advancing a Purpose Greater Than the Organization

Ultimately, Thai IOD’s ambition extends beyond developing more knowledgeable or skilled directors. Its goal is to cultivate directors who can make a meaningful difference to boards, organizations, and Thai society.

This is the essence of Thai IOD’s mission: helping strengthen Thailand’s competitiveness on the global stage through robust corporate governance from within.

The transition from Mr. Kulvech Janvatanavit to Dr. Nattavut Kulnides represents far more than a leadership change. It is the continuation of a shared commitment to enhancing the quality of Thai directors, promoting strong governance practices, and strengthening the long-term competitiveness of the Thai business sector.

Because the future is not shaped by organizations alone. It is shaped by visionary leaders and boards that are prepared to navigate constant change.

Thai IOD will continue to stand behind those decisions as a trusted partner, empowering Thai directors to move forward with confidence, create positive impact for their organizations, society, and the nation, and help write the next chapter of Thailand’s future on a foundation of strong and sustainable governance.
